Chapter 8

Rose was up early taking care of the last few details before the moving van arrived. Everything looked in order. With the curtains gone and the boxes stacked, the room appeared a little brighter. She would not miss this place. It was good to look to the future, especially since she felt it was a bright one.

She was happier than she ever thought she’d be after the storm and after learning of Greg’s death. Then Bach’s was sold and David came into her life. When the moving van left her today, she’d begin the next segment of her future.

“I’m here.”

Rose heard Amber’s voice as she shouted from the doorway.

“And look who I found on the doorstep?”

Rose turned. Amber and David stood in the doorway.

“I’m here to help and I brought coffee.” He held up a cardboard tray bearing three cups with the logo of a popular coffee house.

“Thanks,” Amber said, reaching for one. “I’ve only had one this morning.”

He handed Rose a cup. She noticed her name was printed on the side. “I brought a variety of sweeteners and creamers, since I didn’t know how you liked it.” He looked at Amber.

“Sweet,” she said, taking a couple of sugar packets.

“Okay, just tell me what to do, Rose,” David volunteered. “I can carry boxes, stack books, anything you want.”

Including cooking breakfast, Rose thought. David had ditched the suit and tie for khaki shorts and a Ralph Lauren T-shirt. The Logan Beach logo had been stitched on the left side. It stretched across his shoulders and chest, defining the strong body underneath, a body Rose had run her fingers over. The shorts bore the same logo. Her face threatened to overheat. She camouflaged it by looking at Amber and smiling. As usual her friend was dressed in loud yellow shorts and and a pink neon shirt; even her matching tennis shoes were bright enough to make you blink in the morning light.

“Where did you get those?” Rose asked.

“I found them in an outlet store. Do you want me to get you a pair?” Amber asked, displaying one foot by shifting her weight and resting her foot on its heel.

“I think I have enough tennis shoes for the time being,” Rose answered.

David looked out the window. “I think the moving van is here.”

Rose gave David and Amber directions as to what needed to go in the van and what items she planned to take in her car. Two strong men who looked like bodybuilders arrived, and they quickly began packing the van. Amber cleared the last of the food from the kitchen while Rose made sure the dishwasher was empty.

David helped the two guys, then moved her personal items, computer, dishes, lamps and one live plant to her car.

“So, are you two a couple yet?” Amber asked, when David was out of the apartment and they were working in the kitchen.

“What?”

Amber mimicked the look on Rose’s face. “Don’t give me that what? He wouldn’t be here unless there was something going on.
